“I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change.
I am changing the things I cannot accept”
~Angela Davis
2020 ends with a breath of fresh air. Inhale and exhale friends. Change is in the wind.
All the planets but Uranus have gone direct (finally), so “The Great Pause” of 2020 is finally ushering in some forward motion. Additionally, The COVID cluster (Saturn, Pluto, and Jupiter in Capricorn) of 2020 is finally loosening. Saturn and Jupiter leave earthy Capricorn for good and move officially into Aquarius mid-December.
From earth to air.
Just that visual alone can map the new that is emerging. The upcoming year promises more momentum, more movement, and more impetus for innovation. Air cycles map new discoveries, ideas, potential, technology, connections, and embrace a genius the Earth signs, in their grounded vision of reality, do not fathom.
Saturn and Jupiter have danced together all of 2020, echoing the cycles of profound transformation we have all been living. Their conjunction in Aquarius on December 21st, 2020 though initiates the upcoming themes for all of 2021.
Many astrologers have said this conjunction is the official beginning of the Age of Aquarius. We will not be fully there until Pluto joins the party in 2024, but this symbolizes a step in that direction.
What makes this time so significant?
The conjunction between Saturn and Jupiter is powerfully poignant.
- December 21st itself is auspicious, marking the Winter Solstice noting the longest night/shortest day of the year. Themes of deep self-reflection and inner contemplation, as well as the promise of returning light, prevail.
- Additionally, the conjunction is exceptionally close. (Look skyward and you will see a bright ‘Christmas Star’ as these two celestial bodies join).
- The conjunction also occurs at 0° Aquarius. Known as a critical degree of a sign, this reveals a significant time of regeneration, rebirth, and renewal. It is a compelling and dynamic beginning.
- Saturn and Jupiter meet every 20 years, so we are quite literally starting a new 20-year cycle (Look at your chart to note exactly what this means for you, or contact me for a reading).
Not only that, but there is an even larger pattern shift. Typically, Saturn and Jupiter meet in mostly one element for 200 years before beginning a new 200-year cycle in a new element. Synchronistically, this Saturn/Jupiter conjunction delineates the end of the latest 200-year cycle in mostly earth, to the next one in air.
What does that all mean?
When the force of discipline and integrity (Saturn) joins with ideals and higher truth (Jupiter), real innovation and genius are possible (Aquarius). Things like information, science, discoveries, and technology are going to be at the forefront. Aquarius represents the genius, innovators, mavericks, and visionaries within and among us. It represents the parts of us that can only level up our thinking by busting apart old paradigms. Known as being somewhat detached and radically rebellious, Aquarius symbolizes the part of us that can realize technical truths minus the emotional self. It is the ability to see the WHOLE picture, the challenges, the solutions, the comfortable truths, and the ones that are not.
And we NEED some Aquarius thinking right now. The status quo is what brought us here, and here and it is precisely what isn’t working. We will need to DO things differently, and do things differently, we will need to shift perspectives.
Without the revolutionaries, scientists, visionaries, geniuses, and paradigm shifters, we would not be where we are today, and they deserve that credit. Yet, it was only when cultural tides adopted the new thinking that change happened. The match was struck, but the fire itself required the oxygen of collective breath to burn. This type of significant awakening is what this time reflects- the potent dance between the individual and the collective. Still, it is also often uncomfortable for those that like the status quo, especially if that status quo serves some flavor of familiarity. Change requires we be uncomfortable, and in general, we as a species try to avoid that.
What would happen, though, if you knew being uncomfortable was where all the magic happened?
What if you knew that feeling of uncertainty was simply a feeling of change?
What if you learned to lean into it and not reflexively away?
That is what this time is all about—the promise of unlimited potential woven within the practice of taking refuge in the uncertainty itself.
So we can expect some truth bombs revealing some change potential. Expect not to have all the answers right away. Expect to be challenged to perceive your reality differently- people, politics, social dynamics, technology, occupations, schooling, and health care, all seen through new eyes. Expect to look at your current tribe and assess if it is still for you. Expect to be called to make some good trouble somewhere. Expect to embrace the force of sacrifice (again and again), and within that practice, reclaim your individuation in harmony within the whole. The work is not over. We will need all hands on deck to reckon with the massive revelation of 2020.
Aquarius times remind us of that too.
Imagine attending a symphony of the world’s greatest musicians. Each decided to play a piece that best expressed their personal instrument and talent—one hundred of the very best musicians each playing different melodies. Regardless of the expertise, you would hear only noise.
But what happens when they decide on an untied score?
Melody. Music.
Regardless of the talent, it is only when united the real magic is revealed.
This marriage of individuation and collaboration, authenticity and belonging, describes the grace of Aquarius.
Because Aquarius energy reminds us our best music is heard when we join as one in an inspired vision, our unique expression a color in the rainbow in the whole of existence. It reminds us we are at a time in history when selfish idealism can no longer sustain us.
If 2020 has taught us anything, it is to reveal the truth that we are all connected. This time asks us to start living that way.
Nothing ever changes unless it changes. Our very world relies on a new vision of humanity radical in its equality and collaboration, not just for each other but for the planet itself.
