Cancer Full Moon 12/26/23-Embrace the Messy

  • by

A new year always offers the excitement of potential and beginnings. This year is no different. There is certainly the promise of possibility and newness—more than in the last few years. But, with the Full Moon in Cancer, the flavor of change moves from the external to the internal. There is a need to heal. There is a need for some recuperative and remedial change. There is a need to restore before the journey begins again.

Maybe you are feeling that, too. The last year (s!) has been a roller coaster ride of hope, disillusionment, optimism, disappointment, innovation, community, polarity, appreciation, and deep grief. And the ride isn’t over. Maybe your heart is a bit worn out, its pieces scattered. Cancer reminds us that while healing is necessary and possible, we must first get really real about what requires healing.

And to do that, we need to FEEL.

In truth, feelings get our attention. They are meant to. Whether it is the feeling of physical pain reminding us to take a break or an inner emotion alerting us to some critical experience- feelings have information. Of course, this is where things get tricky. While feelings and the data they carry are always important, they are not always accurate to the present situation. Think of an old injury resurfacing under physical stress. Emotions do the same thing. If the stings of past emotional wounds have left scars, we are more apt to feel them stronger in the present. In this way, sometimes, current feelings have residue from a past experience, which can cause elevated reactions.

This is why it is so vital for us to develop emotional maturity. Keeping one foot on land and one in the river, the goal is to bravely feel and identify the intelligence of the flow without getting swept away. The aim is to sort out the why’s and what’s of feelings, allowing for responsiveness, not reaction.

No doubt this Full Moon in Cancer will bring up the feels. Good. That’s the point. Additionally, this is a reminder for all extra feeling types to apply soul screen as needed. Nerve endings are a bit raw at the moment. Things are messy. In fact, the Sabian symbol for this degree is called the “train wreck degree,” literally an automobile wrecked by a train. In truth, emotions can be stormy and chaotic. Sometimes, life can wreck us. Situations can break us wide open.

Enter empathy-both for ourselves and others. The threads and volume of the feels are different for everyone. Everyone has their own journey, their own experience, their own history, their own train wreck moments. Empathy means we are willing to honor that.

Because embracing the messy is hard and unpredictable. Even overwhelming. It means accepting the unpredictable, imperfect, and uncertain parts of our experiences. It means acknowledging that life isn’t always neatly packaged or straightforward. Instead, it’s filled with challenges, failures, unexpected turns, and collisions. Rather than seeking perfection or control, it’s about finding meaning, growth, and grace amid the messy.

Feeling deeply is a strength – it shows that you’re actively engaging with the world around you, paying attention to what’s happening, and being honest towards yourself and others. It’s about acknowledging the complexity of feelings and understanding that experiencing many emotions doesn’t make you flawed or weak at all; instead, it showcases your emotional strength and capacity for empathy and understanding.

So at this Full Moon, embrace the messy. Honor the train wrecks for the lessons they require. Allow your feelings to offer the wisdom they hold.

“You’re actually not a mess at all. You’re just a feeling person in a messy world. You are exactly right to feel a lot right now. It does not mean you’re weak- it means you’re strong enough to be paying attention.” – Glennon Doyle
