It is said history is not a straight line by a concurrent continuation of circles spiraling forward. Historically, scholars can observe recurring patterns in history, such as the rise and fall of empires, economic cycles, and social movements. These patterns suggest that certain events tend to follow a predictable course over time. Of course, history does not happen in a vacuum. Humans quite literally create it. And as a species, human nature tends to remain relatively constant throughout time. As a result, people often react to similar circumstances in similar ways, leading to the repetition of certain behaviors and events. In fact, human reactivity tends to use the past and apply it to the present, further continuing the spiral of re-occurrence.
Until it doesn’t.
Thank goodness for those who see the requirement of response rather than reaction. Thank goodness for those who rethink rather than groupthink when challenged. Thank goodness to those change makers who push the growth edges of innovation and choose new ways to solve old problems. Ideally, if more of us could do those things more often, we would save a lot of repeated lessons and time. We humans have chosen to do better in many ways (think social justice reform, civil rights, scientific and technological advancements, etc.), but this progress has been slow, tedious, and hard, a heavy slog to claim higher ideals. Additionally, many among us still resist those necessary evolutions.
What if we decided to chose a new way without needing to keep returning to the same lessons again and again?
A fascinating and perhaps hopeful question.
What if we applied the same question to our own lives? What if, instead of repeating the same patterns, we claimed change the first time?
Which brings us to the Full Moon in Virgo.
Because Virgo deals in the real.
What is. Which may be different from what we want it to be. Grounded and sturdy, Virgo is not afraid of bottom-lining reality. That is also why Virgo gets a bad rap at times. Who wants to always focus on what could be better? Who wants to see the world as a constant room to organize or clean up? Virgos have that powerful minutiae-like perspective of what could and needs improving. We should thank them for it. That’s a lot of responsibility to hold.
With this Moon in Virgo, there is a call to see your life through a Virgo lens. Saturn opposing this Moon adds to that theme. Pay attention to what needs attending. Look for cycles reoccurring and patterns reemerging, with the intention of some final learning or resolution.
In fact, the Sabian symbol for this Full Moon is “A merry-go-round.” In its highest destiny, this degree symbolizes the celebration of the turn of the wheel- change itself. It is that life constant that represents possibility, potential, and the birthing of the new. In its challenge, this degree reminds us that patterns repeat until we learn them. If you find yourself in a repeatedly challenging similar event, experience, or situation, it is time to get the lessons so the cycle can finally end. Because being on a merry-go-round temporarily is fun, a wild ride of excitement. It is a whole different experience if you are trapped there.
The good news is life changes. The challenging news is that life changes. Life is inherently dynamic. While change can be exciting and lead to positive outcomes, it can also be daunting and require adaptation and resilience.
So, at this Full Moon, look at the ride that is your life. Is there a growth edge you are being asked to claim? Is there an outdated pattern, relationship, or experience that you are being asked to shift?
Because now is the time to do it.
“Lessons in life will be repeated until they are learned.”
