At this first Full Moon of 2024, we find ourselves at the crossroads of change. That tenuous place between the known and not yet known, what was and what is yet to be, past and future, tradition and innovation. We feel it personally, collectively, and even historically. You see, astrology, like life, is all about balance.
Tradition is important. It is that sturdy base of culture, values, traditions, ritual, and language that offer connection and stability. It gives our life a sense of meaning and links us to our lineage. Innovation is likewise vital. It drives progress, solves challenges, and creates positive change. It offers potential and the reality of growth. Problems arise when one side gets too emphasized. When the inevitability of change clashes with the desire for stasis or when innovation loses contact with the sturdiness of tradition, tension, even conflict can ensue.
Historically and personally, there are times when growth is meant to supersede stability and times where stability is meant to supersede growth. We are in the former. A collective growth edge.
In fact, the Sabian Symbol for this Full Moon is “A conservative, old fashioned lady is confronted by a “hippie” girl (Rudhyar). Another rendition is “An old-fashioned conservative person attempts to preserve a lifestyle of the past.” A somewhat apt description of current times, suggesting the very present tension we are living.
Where in your life are you being asked to release some old school familiarity in exchange for some needed progress? Remember, these required changes may go against the comfort of what is known. They will likely challenge current traditions and beliefs. Good. That’s the place of change. Rather than cling tightly to what was, what if we courageously turned into the new? Because while tradition can teach us where we’ve been, we can’t grow there.
And Leo wants to grow. It wants to expand. It wants to bring us to the fire of potentiality and greatness we all have within us. It ignites that inner creativity and adaptability that dares to dream and wants to expand horizons solving problems in new innovative ways.
Leo is our fiery essence. Our sun self. Done well, it connects us to that heart space within where truth resides. Thus, it reflects the leadership qualities of courage, compassion, authenticity, empathy, inspiration, and love. Done less well and we fall into the selfish sun qualities of excess hubris and authoritarianism, where outside validation and approval become our life energy. We will likely see both shades of this throughout the New Year as Aquarian themes awaken the natural balance between Aquarius and Leo.
If Aquarius is meant to teach us to unite our unique authenticity with a greater collective cause, Leo is how we claim that uniqueness. In the collective symphony in which we are playing, Leo helps us find our own instrument.
The sun can only shine from the inside out. This Full Moon allows the opportunity for you to claim that radiance through the love of radical self-accountability and courageous self-expression, clearing away any clouds of fears and blocks. It will likely take us into the uncertainty of progress requiring the courage to leave the familiar. Which is the very definition of change itself. Because the more we shine with the light of our own authentic being the more light we can offer the world.
And in darker times, we need all the light we can muster.
“There is always light. If only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it.”
— Amanda Gorman
