Astrologically, many signs and planets represent change, but they vary in the flavor and nuance of the type. For example, Piscean change is somewhat elusive but endearing. Think of a slow drip of water etching a stone. Scorpio change is transformational and intense, asking us to go deep and traverse some hidden realms. Gemini change is fast and agile, asking us to organize and decide amongst a myriad of choices. Aquarius change, though, is one of sudden and unexpected newness. Think of surprises, flashes of insight, revelations, shocking events, and technical truths we can’t unsee. That’s an Aquarian change. Said to be a higher octave of air, Aquarius is electric. And like electricity travels through vast networks at a split-second speed, so connected are our actions and results. In fact, there is an interconnection with everything- our choices and the effects of those choices, our own lives and the lives of others, and the natural world and our very sustainability. There will be no denying the reality of that as we venture into the next two and a half decades. Life will keep reminding us how interconnected we are.
Thus, Aquarius represents the relationship between personal authenticity and individuation in harmony within the collective. It represents the parts in relation to the whole because any system is only as healthy as the parts that make it up.
Think of it this way. Imagine attending a symphony of the world’s greatest musicians, and each decided to play a piece that best expressed their personal instrument and talent—one hundred of the very best musicians, each playing different melodies. Regardless of the expertise, you would hear only noise.
But what happens when they decide on an untied score?
Harmony. Music.
Regardless of the talent, it is only when united that the real magic is revealed.
This marriage of individuation and collaboration, authenticity and belonging, describes the grace of Aquarius. Our unique instrument of authenticity, freedom, and sovereignty was never meant to be selfishly appreciated but gifts to share with a greater good. It takes every color to make the most brilliant rainbow. And our world is a colorful rainbow. This network of connection extends from families to communities to nations and the whole world. There is no escaping that we are all part of a living whole. As we move into this Aquarian age, we must start living that truth.
Additionally, Aquarian times also signify the connections between past choices and results, previous actions, and present consequences. Every action leads us somewhere—every choice, every thought, and every intention is a link in the chain of our own life experiences. For better or worse, we are and will be living that truth, too.
This understanding is also why Aquarius is most associated with innovators, visionaries, and revolutionary dreamers. The geniuses, scientists, inventors, and out-of-the-box thinkers are the ones who really comprehend cause and effect in the web of interconnection. They are grounded in the fact that choices and actions today determine future outcomes. Thus, Aquarius reminds us to embrace this knowing. It reminds us to play the long game, looking ahead to determine present actions. Aquarius times remind us we are literally seeding the future for generations to come with our choices and actions today. We had best choose wisely.
The Sabian symbol for this degree adds to this understanding. A Tree Felled and Sawed to Ensure a Supply of Wood for the Winter reminds us of the need to prepare, think ahead, and anticipate the nuance of everyday choices and actions. The symbol underscores the importance of taking practical, concrete actions rather than relying solely on abstract ideas or hopes. To survive the chill of winter means we must prepare ahead. There is a realness of responsibility and accountability for our actions. What we do now matters as to what shows up later.
In truth, we NEED some Aquarius right now. Why? Because what got us here can’t take us there. We need new solutions, technologies, and ways of understanding the complexities we face in a truly interconnected world. We need visionaries and thinkers who reason beyond what is into what could be. We need those who understand that every action, no matter how small, sends ripples of consequence into the unknown. We need some technical accountability to pierce any fundamentalism, cognitive distortion, and denial.
So, at this Full Moon, know that collectively and personally, we are being called to plant new seeds. Seeds that nurture community, cooperation, innovation, sovereignty, reconsideration, and humanitarianism. Seeds that uphold individual authenticity within the broader context of the whole. Seeds that foster hope for the future and realize the potential and possibility of what could be. Because our world relies on a new vision of humanity, radical in its equality and collaboration, not just for each other, but also for the planet itself.
“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seed you plant.”
~Robert Louis Stevenson
